Worth visiting!
Escape to Mexico!
I took Spanish for college credit at Tec in Guaymas for 6 weeks during the summer of 2006. There were only 5 other Americans in the program, and we lived in a 4plex apartment building with college students from all over Mexico. The apartment was in a neighborhood close to the school and near Miramar Beach. The people were very friendly and I never felt scared the entire time I was there. We visited downtown and the downtown market almost everyday. A few of the people that worked at the market even remembered our names! There’s a great all you can eat buffet on the main strip downtown. La Ley is like a mall. You can find phone cards here and all the groceries and cheap alcohol you’ll need. It sounded a little scary at first, but the food was great and we never got sick off of it! You can get around anywhere by bus for just a few pesos a trip. La Playa de Cortez is an awesome old Spanish-style hotel with a small private beach. If you are looking for nightlife, San Carlos is only about 10 miles away ($20 each way for a taxi packed full of people). I suggest putting the taxi company’s phone number in your phone so you don’t get stranded in San Carlos (like we did one night)! 1910 is a fun disco where you can find a few Americans. Aqua is a modern club right on the marina that was usually packed and always fun. The Marina resturant is a good place to go before going to a club. Froggy’s has good food and lots of Americans. Be sure to make the trip out to Nogales beach and to see the sand dunes. Rent a jet ski. Go on a sunset cruise. The sunsets from the beach at La Playa de Cortez Hotel are amazing everyday! And you must go swimming in the ocean in San Carlos at night. There is plankton in water that glows when you touch it! It’s amazing! The beaches in San Carlos are much nicer than Guaymas. The canyon (can’t remember the name) is cool to explore, but take a guide or a local with you. The airport in Guaymas is small, but nice. If you’re looking for a Mexico destination with real Mexican feel, you’ll find it in Guaymas!
