Deer Canyon Campground
Worth visiting!
A pleasant spot — 2 years ago
My husband and I spent the night at the Deer Canyon Campground last night (it’s November!), and it wasn’t as strenuous of a trip as I had imagined. The website claims it could take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours (one way) to hike the three miles to the campground, but it took us less than an hour and a half. Hiking out was even shorter. The website also cautions that you have to pack all your own water in. My husband and I did not use nearly as much water as we expected for our overnight trip; we brought about 2 and 3/4 gallons total (better safe than sorry!) and only used about 3/4 gallon for the night (to be fair, we did not pack in any food that required water for cooking). I think we overestimated because we did not expect the hike to be nearly so short.
The path to the campground involves a lot of climbing over hills. Even though there is not very much elevation change from start to finish, there sre a lot of steep sections of trail. There were a lot of people hiking, running, and biking along the trails when we were there.
The campground itself has about 4 closely spaced picnic tables and a pit toilet. Hikers and bikers stop at the tables during the day. There is only about one shady place to put a tent; otherwise, the options are all open, grassy spaces.
Overall, a pleasant place to spend a night, even in the fall months.
