Serengeti Plains

A question about this place:
Anyone know when the great wildebeest migration occurs? And is this the place where Mt Kilimanjaro is located?  — 1 year ago

Tommy,

We went to the Serengeti in mid January and caught the end of the northward migration.

Kilimanjaro is a fair way from the Serengeti (100 miles or so, I’d guess). We did visit Amboseli National Park in Kenya, which is on the Kenyan side of Kilimanjaro. Good views and lots of elephants.

Hope this helps,

Andrew

Thanks that really helps! I’d love to visit Amboseli, especially if it’s near Kilimanjaro as you say.

I’m not sure how Andrew saw the northward migration in January b/c we just went to Tanzania at end of May and saw the migration heading North in all its glory which is generally the time it happens every year. We went to a few different parks and they hadn’t quite hit the northend of the Serengeti park yet. They travel about 50km/day.

I recommend doing a safari where you start out near Kilimanjaro (Arusha) and hit Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Masai Mara, Serengeti South and North.

I’ve just returned from a safari in Tanzania which can be studied more closely on http://jakob.thusgaard.com/photos/album/leen-eric-and-jakob-on-tour-tanzania-2006/ and http://tanzania.thusgaard.com. We went to several towns and parks in the following order:
  • Flight to Kilimanjaro Airport
  • One day in Moshi by the foot of Kilimanjaro
  • Tarangire National Park
  • Via Ngorongoro Conservaition Area to the Serengeti.
  • Serengeti North (until Bologonja gate * not into Kenya)
  • Serengeti South
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Tarangire National Park (a must-see!)

We went from 27th of September through 10th of October. At that time the migration was in Maasai Mara.
