Have you heard of the book Dark Star Safari? Paul Theroux made that trip (except the other way around, Egypt -> South Africa) and it’s a really well-written and honest book. I liked it a lot.

I haven’t yet read it but I will. I was suprise also of the Great Railway Bazaar. A Great book!
