Lindisfarne

Worth visiting!

With Wet Feet  — 3 years ago

I only made it by coach, and only just after the tide had receded (the road was still wet, the water still moving). I had so little time there—i only just glimpsed the priory ruins and the tiny church (where i heard strange flute noises coming up from the water, i think).

I need to go back, and this time by foot.

Worth the time, any time

Another name for Lindisfarne is the Holy Island. I’ve spent a week there on two separate occasions and look forward to returning. (Honestly, I’d like to retire there but fear I cannot afford it.)

The island is a tidal island, isolated from the mainland during high tides. That fact affects everything about the place. The economy caters to tourists – but no tourist can get there until the tide goes out. So everyone is laid back until the tide turns. And when the tourists leave and the tide comes back in – what an incredible feeling of enclosure, safety and peace.

I love the place.
