Why I want to go to this place

I can’t believe that there’s a Mary Hawkins Memorial Library! I don’t know who my namesake/distant relative is, but I love that this exists… The building’s kinda cute too! I like that it’s a little blue house—it just wouldn’t do to have a big silly stone library with my name on it. I’m not Carnegie, you know?

I’d love to go here and get a library card with my name on it… Do you think they’d do that for me if I just contacted them outta the blue, or would that be too weird?

Neat!

I saw this in Wanderlust and clicked over to get the link to show you, but here you are the one who added it. ha!

Couldn’t hurt to ask for a library card. :)

Isn't it cool?

I need to figure out where they are first… I only found the picture from that guy’s website.

I know

I know who Mary Hawkins was - she was my husband’s grandmother. She lived on Saltspring Island with her husband Stanley after they retired - and she started the library. The library started as a room in a house, and expanded several times. The roof sags in the winter if there is snow. A new one is planned next door now, bigger and better, and I don’t think it will be named after her. Better visit soon if you plan on going.

I’ve been there a few times—there are still a few people working there who remember Mary Hawkins, but she has been dead for many years.

Oooh!

Thanks for filling me in! It’s good to know who she was…

Ooof—they really do need a new building. That site says that in some places the roof is held up by the bookshelves!
