I’ll be starting a 4 month assignment at Baltimore-Washington Medical Center in November. What is there to do in Glen Burnie? How is the public transportation? I’m coming from Arizona so I know it’s going to be a huge change.

glen burnie is pretty low-key. there is only 1 bus that runs through the town, and it’s bus #42, if i remember correctly. it runs down richie hwy, over hospital drive, and on parts of crain hwy. so if you’re not near a bus stop, your next best bet is a cab. it’s nearly impossible to live in glen burnie without a car.
i wouldn’t necessarily say there is anything to do IN glen burnie, but the city is only about 8 miles away. to get into the city, you can take that 1 bus to the light rail (train) and take it into downtown baltimore. there are a lot of bars, touristy spots like fells point, and a lot of local hardcore and punk shows, and few cool bars and clubs.
but honestly, glen burnie is the dullest of the dull. if you like suburban life, then it might be for you. but when you have grown up there, like i have, it’s hard to say much positive. i’m not exactly sure what you’re into, but all the “fun stuff” is definitely outside of glen burnie.
there is a mall – marley station mall – but not THAT many stores. the best mall to go to is arundel mills mall, which is about 6 miles away off of route 100 west. it’s a big outlet mall and they’re building a lot of new restaurants and stores around the mall, too.
so, if you have anything else in mind, maybe i can help you. just lemme know what you’re into and i’ll see what i can figure out.

Good thing Baltimore is close, huh? We are driving, don’t know if we’re bringing one car or two yet.
We love seeing bands in small venues. My fiance likes punk, I’m more into groups like Guster, Gomez, Flaming Lips and any other off beat kind of indie groups.
Our goal is to get a tattoo in every city we are sent to with our company, so if you know of any good tattoo artists ;-)
I guess as long as there are some decent restaurants and other hang-outs in or around the town we’ll be ok, we’re pretty easy.
Fiance has a friend in DC. I’m afraid to drive in that city so we’ll take the train there for sure.

yeah, baltimore will be your best friend.
the best bar/club/venue to go to to in baltimore is the ottobar ( http://www.theottobar.com ). if you like dancing, there is an indie dance party called taxlo ( http://www.taxlo.com ) at sonar ( http://www.sonar.us ) every friday and it’s free.
this is a good story about the baltimore tattoo museum ( http://www.citypaper.com/bob/story.asp?id=5955 ). there are various other tattoo shops spread around. i’ve heard good things about dragon moon tattoo in glen burnie on crain hwy, but i’ve never been there personally myself. the tattoo (just one) that i have, i got in nyc when i lived there. my boyfriend, however has a few tattoos from jinx proof tattoos here in washington, dc.
speaking of which, washington dc is a fairly close day-trip type thing as it’s only about an hour away. driving in dc isn’t as bad as finding a parking spot. but there is the marc train which picks up at penn station in baltimore (which you can get to by the aforementioned light rail train). a lot of travelling, but worth it if you wanna see the nations capital (where i now live).

Thanks for all the information!
This is going to be quite an adventure. We’re driving from Arizona to Maryland with two screaming cats to work in a place we’ve never been for 4 months and then we’re picking up and going somewhere else for another assignment (most likely California). I sure hope the cats learn to like riding in cars.
