Holland Village Locals

Worth visiting!

Question: Recommend a place to rent near Holland Village?  — 1 year ago

I just moved here and am staying with my parents off Farrer Road. I’m looking to rent a place with my husband and toddler. We want to be close to my parents but like the idea of having someplace like Holland V within walking distance. 3BR would be ideal. Budget is probably under 3K maybe less – we haven’t got jobs yet and we don’t know if we’re going to get a car. Any thoughts? We’ve driven around the area a little bit and once we’re over our jet lag and colds, we may try to walk around. We’ve also driven down to the Ulu Pandan area and Coronation Plaza/Duchess/Shelford/Watten area so far. Would love to hear from people who are living here.

chip bee?

i live in Chip Bee Gardens, a residential complex right across Holland Village Cold Storage. i think it suits your requirement perfectly: a 3BR house (not an apartment, though) with rent under 3K. i think it’s about 2.2K now. you can check out their site: www.chipbee.com

good luck with your house-hunting!

wow .. that was fast

Thanks for the recommendation and the website. One of my former school teachers used to live in Chip Bee. Another one used to live in Jade Mansion. I barely remember what they look like though – it was over 15 years ago. We drove around the estate yesterday. It looks like some of the houses are in good condition and others are in need of a bit of TLC. Were you able to have a choice of house? Were the JTC responsive if you needed anything fixed? I love the location. Easy to get to Holland V and to bus stops and not far from MRT.

chip bee just changed management around two years ago. and the new management are fixing the houses (and raising the prices!) for the new rentals. so, if you decide to move in, you’ll get the fixed up house.

so far, JTC has been very responsive in fixes and complaints. the turn around is only a few hours (or minutes, sometimes).

the problem, from what i heard, is the waiting list of chip bee is quite long. so you may want to call and check if there is units available. when i moved, i had a 5-6 houses to choose. but lately, due to the waiting list, you may not have the luxury of choosing.

Welcome to Singapore!!

The best way to get the best flat to rent or buy is still getting info from the local paper- ”The Straits Times”. You’ll get to see more classifed ads advertise frequently on the weekend papers.

Err, not sure if you heard before, Singapore is most expensive place on earth to “buy” a car since the 80s. It’s about 4 times more expensive than the North America. Though the price of owning a car has dropped quite a bit in the last 2 yrs.

You don’t really need to have a car here esp everywhere is accessible by the MRT (subway), taxi and buses. We have one of the cheapest yet most efficient and world class transportation system here.

Holland Village is one of the more expensive area to live in but still you are able to find a PRIVATE apt-3BD Room for under 3K, depending on the condition as well. We have a different kind of housing than most part of the world. The most common and prominant here is the HDB (govt subsidized flat), which of course don’t have those kind of features or facilities like those in the private housing. About 60 % of us live in HDB, I am one of them. And the pricing of HDB also varies, depending on the area you are living in. Though it’s govt subsidized flat, the cost is equivalent to buying a nice house in U.S. or Australia.

How long are you going to be here and I suppose you are from the States? You have come at the right time because Singapore is not as expensive as compared to 10yrs ago, esp the housing prices has significally dropped to almost half the price!

Good luck to your house searching!

Thanks very much!

I actually grew up here and left for college many moons ago. Singapore has changed a lot since I left, plus I never lived here as an adult so I have a lot to learn.

I noticed when I drove by yesterday that some of the HDBs near Holland V have been upgraded. If you live in one of those, is it a big improvement? Do the prices go up a lot after upgrade? Are there a lot of HDB for rent these days? I must confess that I only looked in Straits Times at the private apts but I shall look under HDB flats tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

Holland Village

So you are one of those grew up here, and then live somewhere else and back here again ;)

Oh you can also take note of those pin up notice at the Cold Storage Supermarket(open 24 hrs)..Pic attached. Sometimes you do get advertisement of “Garage SALE” of furniture or apt for rental, or even lost pet :)

No, I just recently became a proud owner of HDB flat in Holland Village area :) So just moved here recently! I grew up in Little India area, my parent still lives there.

In fact nowaday the HDB flat is more IN DEMAND than before, as ppl are not as crazy over the 5C(material pursuit) as before. We already by passed the stage :) So buying a HDB flat is a wiser choice than owning a private apt. I am quite a pragmatic and practical person :)

Regarding your question on the upgrading flat, yes, upgraded HDB flat definitely costs more!! One thing good about the upgraded flat is you either get an extra ROOM made specially for you, lift at every floor, newer ceramic flooring, and special mail box system to block JUNK mail.

As we do get tons of junk advertisement daily..including those property ads(buying & selling).. So those upgraded flat, like mine, has this new system.

P.S. That extra room is constructed according to voting system(I guess most of the residents in my block don’t like to have more dust or noise pollution, so they vote “NO” for extra room :()

Yes I myself had been looking for apt for a while and the best way I concluded is still going through Straits Times.

If you go through “agent”, you will need to pay them commission. If you do it through owner then you will save the fee. I am not too sure on the rental commission for agent, but if buying home than its about (1% of e home sale) for their commission :P.. It will cost you more commission if you are buying private housing..But they will save your hassle by running all the necessary paper work done for you.

Really depends on your lifestyle, if you looking for a private pool then the private housing will be a better choice. There is however a huge public pool at the Holland Village area, entry fee is only $1. Locker fee is also $1. Just been renovated and very nice looking :)

P.S. SORRY THAT WAS ME, deleted twice, dont know what happened, the page was hanged for a while, and then it got deleted :)

EDIT Typo error, I meant to say 1% of the home sale instead of ”$1k”. That means to say if the flat costs about $200,000 dollars, then the commission you need to pay the agent is $2k! An old 3 room HDB flat would cost around that price. Private home of course would be more expensive, hence the commission would be more than 1%.

nadineyap has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
