Why I want to go to this place

I’ve traveled throughout China and still haven’t been to Guilin yet, and I know I’m missing out on one of the most beautiful places in China. My Chinese tutor would talk non-stop about Guilin. She kept telling me that I haven’t seen China until I’ve been to Guilin. Additionally, every friend that has gone has had an amazing time. I recently found the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat while surfing the Net and mentioned it to a couple of friends this summer, as they had some time off. They went and said it was one of the best places they’d ever been to in China. I was so jealous when I read their email because I would’ve loved to join them. Alas, I’ll have to wait until later this year, but you can bet that I will be checking into one of the guesthouses for a week of R&R and nature loving. Fresh beer fish and a climbing wall!

I’ve seen photos of the Guilin area and have always wanted to see it for myself… amazing mountains. The resort looks like a perfect base from which to explore the area.

Make reservations early!

I’ve been here a few times but most recently I reserved the room too late. I thought 2 weeks in advance was enough but all the balcony rooms overlooking the river and mountains were booked. I guess the secret is out on Yangshuo Mountain Retreat as it’s becoming more and more popular with expats in China especially.

Though I tend to think Guilin is a bit overrated, I’d say it’s worth visiting!

And in case you don’t know, in Chinese, we have this old saying “Guilin is more scenic than the rest of the world, yet Yangshuo is more scenic than Guilin”....
err it’s so hard to translate the concise Chinese saying into English… but you get the idea

Overrated or not

You can’t beat the scenery and that’s what it’s all about when I travel!

Thanks for reminding me of this saying. I love Chinese proverbs! My Chinese teacher taught me years ago. She was the first one to suggest that I visit Guilin and Yangshuo

Getting Away from it All

Of all the places I’ve been in China, Yangshuo is my favorite. I went with my girlfriend in January this year (it was my 3rd trip) and the mist in the mountains and on the river was like something out of a movie. It’s beautiful all year round, though Summer is relaly hot and humid. West Street is getting a little crazy with the crap discos and all, but the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat remains THE place to enjoy the beauty of Yangshuo without all the package tour groups. It’s been around a few years, run by an American and some lovely locals. The manager is “Little Fish”, and she was amazingly accommodating. Living in a big Chinese city, visiting Yangshuo regularly keeps me sane!
