Singapore (read all 2 entries…)

(in Asia)

Worth visiting!

Cool, but I don't have any need to go back, really.  — 2 years ago

I liked Singapore – don’t get me wrong – it was just a little too clean, strict, and crowded for my taste. The best part of my trip there, though, was the nightlife. Best club I have ever ever been to was in Singapore. Definitely better than a lot of California clubs. It was so much fun, with a crowd from all over the world. Fascinating. Other than that, I’m afraid I wasn’t that impressed by Singapore. China town was not as good as S.F.’s China town, for starters. My tour guide was not nearly as good as the one I had in Thailand (he was mean and had no sense of humor).

The night zoo was cool.

I guess I need to go with someone who lives there and knows fun things to do there.

Oh strange..

Sorry, with all these cool and FASCINATING experience, you are still rating us as “not worth it”? Or was it a mistake?

I think if you prefer dirty places with dirty toilets to visit, there are plenty of them in Asia, esp in S.E.A., Singapore definitely will be out of the question for you ;)

Thanks for thinking that we have the best clubs, I thought that was in Thailand?

And yes, you are right about our Chinatown, it’s not as neat as the one in S.F. But we never claim we have the best chinatown in the world anyway. The Chinatown here is patronized mostly by foreigners, esp Chinese from China or ppl from other S.E.A. countries, most locals hardly want to go there, unless you happen to live in that area, or if you are old folks.

It’s strange that you came here with Tour guide, unless you don’t know a single word of English? Of course you going to get bad tour guide, not many ppl come here by tour, hence its a “dead” profession here. Obviously they will have that grumpy mentality, you can’t make tons of money by being a tour guide here, alot of them are just doing as part time. Some tour guides are even FOREIGNERS. It’s definitely not a dream job like those highly regard in Thailand, you know? Hence, you can’t compare with Thailand, because you can make a hell lot of money from that profession(lots of tips too). And if you can speak English over there, you can go really far, esp in their tourism industry!

P.S. Foreigners who come here through Tour guide are people from China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, and other non-English speaking countries =)

And you don’t really need to come here with someone. There’s tourism board and helpdesk in most major places and shopping centres to help you out in going to the right places of interests. As long as you can speak English, you can do just fine =)

Sorry for the misunderstanding

Oops – I actually didn’t mean to write “not worth it.” I think it’s worth visiting, but I didn’t like it as much as some other places I’ve been to. I didn’t mean to diss your city or insult you. I still liked Singapore. I just didn’t have the best experience. I did not mean to rate it as “not worth it,” though.

Sorry again for the mix-up.

P.P.S.

I do speak English, but went with my high school, so they didn’t “trust” us enough to go without a tour guide, unfortunately. He just was a very unpleasant man… we found out about any cool stuff in Singapore from a local (friend of one of the people going called them and told them about the club, for example). He also told us about how the Chinatown there was “one of the best.”

Sorry for insulting your city – I didn’t mean it. I should have just talked about the tour guide only. He was just really mean (ex: left a couple students behind, then yelled at them for going to the bathroom)and uninformed. Thanks for informing me as to why, though – it sounds like he probably took this job because he just wanted to get paid a little extra money or something.

Thank you :)

Oh I see, thanks for clearing up and responding!! It’s no problem!!

That’s why it’s good to ask question so that we can learn from each other =) Plus, I am just a curious person in nature, like to find out why ppl are makng negative statement or things that are in doubt ;)

To tell you the truth, I don’t understand why ppl have problem being too clean, and then when its too dirty, ppl complain too lol…How come nobody complains about Japan being too clean?? They are equally clean as us!! Strange..I get this feeling that just because 1 person saying it, and the rest of ppl just echo lol

Anyway, like I said earlier, if you like to experience dirty places, there are plenty of them in Asia, esp in China and S.E.A. E.g in China, you could find toilets that has NO DOORS, yes built with no doors, just L shaped toilets where you have to squat down and do your business.(They still have alot of these kind of old fashioned toilets around). Obviously for men it would be easy for them to run to the nearest bushes and do it, but how to for women?? I remembered I had to ask my mum to look out to make sure if there is no one poppin in! What’s worst, no flushing system, they were in buckets, I won’t even dare to look and see what’s down there..And I had to breath hard too :( ..For sure, when you go to places like that, make sure you dont bring in any Jimmy choo shoes in there. lol

Sorry that you didn’t have a good experience when you were here esp with that annoying tour guide. Hopefully next time when you are back here, you will get a better experience. The best experience would have to come here by yourself!! Singapore is a place even safe enough for a single lady to visit! Just need your comfortable shoes and map will do! You could also check with more ideas or things about Singapore which I will put up later on in my 43 T. =)

Cheers!!!

I'll definitely come back with no tour guide

Lol…I guess I should come back by myself sometime, then. I don’t really mind clean, it’s just different for me – haha…I’m from around San Francisco, which isn’t really clean, so yeah. I don’t love really dirty, either, though. I did feel safe in Singapore – even at night – which was really good. :)

What’s some fun stuff to do there during the day? I didn’t really have free time then, so I wasn’t able to find out, but if I ever do go back, I’d like to know. :D

I'm Looking Forward...

...to seeing your list of things to do in Singapore. I’d love to hear the opinion of someone who lives there and knows more of the ins and outs of the place.

I saw some great things in the few days that I was there, and hope to return and see some great things some day in the future.

If and when you post your list of great things to do, I’d love to see some family-friendly types of things in addition to night life types of activities.

I totally want to visit Japan!

...even if it is clean=)))

Asia

I am also really looking forward to visiting Thailand and China. I have lots of friends from both of these countries here in Paris…and they are so nice I am delighted to find out if everyone is as wonderful as they are.

Clubbing in Singapore

Hey! Just wondering which club it is that you went to? Will make sure I check it out with my friends when we’re in Sg. Thanks!

Zouk

The club I went to was Zouk. I think it’s pretty good for the ages 18-25 crowd (they don’t let anyone under 18 in because there’s a bar). When I went, they charged women $20, men $25, and with this you got to order 2 drinks (no additional charge) at the bar. The D.J. played mostly techno when I went, some alternative music, and every now and then had a high blast fog machine come one (which was fun). There are a couple bars there – one close to the dance floor, one above. There was also another room I didn’t go in, but I think there was different music and more dancing there.

You get people from all over the world in Zouk. My friends and I met a really cool bunch from England, for example. Another friend met someone from Peru, I think. Zouk also has some of the best DJ’s – it was awesome. There’s also a place ahead of time where you can leave your bags and coats, so you don’t have to dance with those.

When are you going? Because there are some specials coming up in September for the club.

P.S. I don’t think they allow you to wear shorts and they’re really strict about the age limit.

Zouk

Thanks for the info! I’m in Sg now, for a few weeks. Will get down to Zouk at some point :)

Would like to go to some good hip hop/ RnB nights too…If there are any suggestions, that would be great!

Hmm...

I’d say, maybe try the Ministry of Sound. I haven’t been there, but it seems to get pretty good reviews. I think Wednesday night is Ladies’ night there – ladies get in free – but, I’m not sure if the music is exactly what you’re looking for. I found a site where people reviewed it: http://e-clubbing.com/Reviews-req-showcontent-id-60.html.

I also found another site that had a review for Zouk: http://goasia.about.com/od/singapore/a/zouk.htm

It looks like it’s ladies’ night at a lot of bars and clubs on Wednesday nights, so if you have a bunch of girlfriends, you might want to go out then. :)

Hope you have fun!!

You went to the right club!

Yes Zouk is the by far the only clubs that survived for MORE THAN A DECADE!! It’s the most successful club here in Singapore, and we have also gone regionally to K.L. Malaysia few years ago! You’re right, there is about 3 different music sessions in that club!

Another happening place to go is Ministry of Sound. And if you like cabaret shows there’s Crazy Horse Paris, the first one outside Paris!

There is another cool bar cum dinner place called “balcony”, like the supper club in Amsterdam, where you could basically sleep in the couch and have dinner at the same time!

Yes you are right, Miss rocks, they are very strict about the age limit rule here and no fake ID allowed unlike in other countries lol..But places like Crazy Horse Paris has just lowered their age limit to age 18 recently, because they realised that there are quite a few tourists who come to Singapore with families and sometimes they do have teenagers who are 18-21 yrs old, they would have left out if only their parents are allowed to go in. Hence the changed of rule =)

I would highly recommend “China One” and “Butter Factory” which I just visited recently!! Worth visiting!

More cool clubs will coming up by next year ..E.g The premier Club 40/40, owned by this Rap Mogul, Jay Z. Will be the first one outside U.S.!
