Worth visiting!

Great hotel bargain with character

I’ve stayed here a couple times when in Vancouver. The Sylvia is great as it’s so close to Stanley Park and overlooks English Bay—a very picturesque setting in Vancouver. It’s on the west side so it’s not in the heart of downtown. But Vancouver has a small downtown footprint so it’s really just a 10 minutes walk from the main downtown shopping district.

It’s an older building and the rooms have a bit of character so if you’re looking for Hilton-esque lodging then you’re better off booking a more standard modern hotel downtown. A cool thing about The Sylvia is many of the rooms are suites with small kitchens (you have to ask) which can be helpful if you’re traveling with kids or prefer eating in. Be sure to check out the antiquated front desk registration system—computers have yet to make their mark on this place and it’s nice to see an old school hotel ledger when checking in (could this be the last place in the western world using pencil and paper to make reservations?).

Sounds perfect

Just the kind of place I had hoped existed in Vancouver. I’ve been meaning to take a long weekend there with the family for quite some time. Thanks for the tip!

Another suggestion

The last 2 times in Vancouver I used Priceline—offered $50 and $75/night as my rate and limited the search to downtown. In both cases I got 4-star hotels downtown. Both were good and the rate was stellar.

After making my Sylvia entry Josh mentioned that the last time he visited his room was a bit small. So, I still recommend the Sylvia—but just ask for the larger suites with the kitchen. I visited my friends Kevin and Susan with their 2 year old there last fall and they had one of the kitchen suites with a sitting room between the bedroom and kitchen. It worked great with their daughter and visitors.

In the summer I think the proximity to the beach and park make it a great family spot (provided the room is good). It’s quirky but certainly worth the visit.
