West Anchorage High School

Worth visiting!

Go Eagles  — 3 years ago

I grew up across the street from West High School and attended high school there along with my brothers and sisters. Good friends, good times. There are three parts of the building that stick out in my memory:

1) the blocks—in front of the library were a stack of carpeted blocks where people would sit and chat

2) the benches—as I recall these were by the door to the hockey rink and were populated by guys, but there was a pecking order for who could sit there and who couldn’t

3) the auditorium—a great theater where talent shows, plays and concerts occured. Growing up I remember acts like Ozzie Ozbourne and Deep Purple coming through town and playing at the high school

Senior hall (it was called that, but occupied by mostly juniors) running north-south it connected the main hall (where the seniors had most of their lockers) with the office/admin hall.

Also, the library was called the IMC. Information & Materials Center.

Do you think you would ever go back and teach?

Have you thought of being a teacher?

I'm no teacher

Unfortunately, I’m not schooled in schooling. I have an English degree and almost no teaching experience. I was just back at my mom’s place last weekend in Anchorage, which is right across the street from West—but I always return to Seattle (which is home for me).

Thanks for the suggestion!

Daniel was a fixture on the hockey benches so don’t think for a minute that he got “pecked” off of them.

Dan & trelnar, it would be great to see you two on Aug. 4

West has lost it's touch

Sadly, we had to get rid of the blocks because they got infested with mice. Yuck. Now there are just some boring benches in front of the library, and almost no one really cares to spend time in the area:(

The Auditorium is still huge, but falling apart in places. West needs a lot of work.

The Blocks are gone ???

Too bad about the blocks. Twenty years ago we had a formal dance on those blocks (shades of American Bandstand with the multi-level dancing).

I know they are working on a renovation to the Auditorium. About time, as it was pretty worn decades ago. Lord knows I put some wear and tear into her with all the time I spent there during the 80’s as a student. I chipped in a donation a month ago so that maybe current and future students would continue to enjoy having one of the bigger school auditoriums in the country. Plus Ozzy played there.

cosmic connection

Shane and I were just wondering last night if the blocks were still there. It was the best place in the whole building. But from reading this thread, it sounds like the blocks are the least of the school’s worries.

What should we alumni do? Form a group with the student government to get some of this done? Anyone in Anchorage want to take a lead? I’ll do what I can from Portland…

If you want to help save the Auditorium

Check out the link to the literature about the Auditorium restoration effort from the Alumni page on the West High Site.

(Note the file is 1.1 Meg so it takes a little while to load).

Seems like a good start to fixing up the ol’ school plus the auditorium holds some good memories for me.

Mice?

That’s too bad. The blocks were a unique item at the school. When I return home I get the feeling that the school is in a bit of a maintenance slump. The auditorium really is a unique one so I hope they pull it together.

Maybe there needs to be a student-run fund drive to kick the school in the butt. Or maybe tear the whole building down and start again. If they do that, they should consider saving the auditorium and building from there.

Not what it used to be

Yeah, a student government should get something going but I believe there are already some maintenance jobs in order. Sadly, it would be really hard to get the funding since they might already cut high school hockey due to lack of tax payers willing to vote on bonds.

West isn’t in just a maintenance slump but also an academic slump. Right now the graduation percentage is about 51%.

51%

That’s pretty sad. Leave and never look back, I say. Or – if you’re still attending school there I’d check into taking UAA classes while you’re still in high school. See if they’ll allow you to supplement your HS credits with UAA entry level classes. That’d be a way to get better schooling and (hopefully) work within the system. Years ago I took night classes at UAA and was really impressed.

Good luck.

I'm looking into UAA

I have been taking some math courses at UAA and next when I graduate they should apply. I plan on getting away from West but I don’t know if I want to leave Anchorage permanently. I’m looking into UAA, WWU, and of course Dartmouth:D

Thanks! Good luck to you too!

Student Government

Get some of the kids from student government on this site—maybe some of the alumni that hang out on 43things can help. West was a great school in the 80’s, and can be again!
