but it looked like a very miserable place, compared to the rest of the Island.

No, we drove through together.
It just looked like a depressing place. It may not be, it just seemed so, compared to the other places we saw.
The island is actually quite big, about the same size as Taiwan, about 460km long, and 80km wide, at the widest point.
