Worth visiting!

Observatory cool, biking not.

I did the “mountain biking” tour back before I knew better. The cool part is that you get shuttled up to the observatory on the top of Haleakala to see sunrise—very nice. The bad part is that the mountain biking down is on these crappy bikes and you have to wear these goofy plastic suits. You end up on roads the whole way, and can’t go faster than the slowest person in your group. Avoid the tour at all costs, but do go see Haleakala.

you picked the wrong group

i went with bike it maui and didnt expect a “mountain biking” experience. Sound like you did. better do some reaseach next time. We where given warm polar fleece jackets an gloves…no plastic suits. And the bikes here cruisers…would you really want to ride for 38 miles on a normal bike seat.
The bike ride was the best thing on the island.

It was a gift...

I was given the tour as a gift, although I don’t think my expectation of a mountain bike trip was unfounded, since their literature and signs all made a big deal of what an exciting, extreme adventure it was supposed to be. And yes, they called it mountain biking.

I regularly do ride many miles on a “normal bike seat,” as do most folks who ride even somewhat seriously. That’s what bike shorts are for. What I wouldn’t want to ride for 38 miles is a cruiser with a poofty saddle. ;)

My post is just a warning to those who might be looking for something resembling a real bike adventure. As for it being “the best thing on the island,” different strokes for different folks, I guess. I had a great time on the island, and the bike tour was by far the weakest link.

I’m glad you had a better experience than I did. :)
