A lot of people don’t realize that Girdwood is a part of Anchorage. It was incorporated into the Municipality of Anchorage in 1975. Girdwoodians pay Anchorage property taxes, vote in Anchorage municipal elections, and are hooked up to Anchorage water and sewer facilities. You’d never know it, though. Girdwood is physically separated from Anchorage by a 40 mile commute and maintains its own strong identity.
