43 Places News and Announcements

Worth visiting!

Discussion: Tweaks to the profile page  — 2 years ago

We are still tweaking the new profile page, but we pushed out a few changes today. We added the list back along with the functional links (we sort of forgot about those links, sorry). We also added a little bit of photo love over on the right. You wouldn’t know it (because we haven’t explained it) but the 12 photos are sorted by your cheers – so you can see which spots people think you ought to visit. We also moved the travel map up a bit (but not much).

We know change is never easy, but our goal is to make the site simpler to use and understand, even as it grows in features. Let us know if you think this is getting better.

Can I modify my username?

If so, how is it accomplished?

Just Wonderful

Thank you for the changes! It looks great – back to being more functional yet keeping the best of the new. And cheering is made easy again. Yay!!

I found one thing to wish for...

On the Entries page I cannot tell which place each entry is associated with – unless I click on the entry title. Hopefully that’s an easy thing to add. Thanks!

I miss them too, but ever since we’ve had the 43 people site, I’ve lobbied for people’s flickr photos to live over there rather than on 43 things/places. Since the stream of photos doesn’t necessarily relate to the person’s goals or exploration, but does relate to the person, it seems to me that 43people.com would be the natural home for the flickr stream. Thoughts?

I’m mad at Flickr but I think this is a brilliant idea.

Which takes forever

The Robots have photo linking now, but uploading, say, 60 great pictures of a place by downloading it from Flickr and then re-uploading takes forever…

A great “link some photos from Flickr” would be fantastic…but would also be specific to only the Flickr service, which not everyone uses.

Oh where are the Greasemonkey Robot Script creators…

Awesome. I once again feel at peace with the site! And I like the philosophy of how the pics of the places get up there. Nice job!

Thank you

I’m doing the happy dance because the functional list with entries and cheers is back. :) Thank you. :)

As ciscot says, the entries page needs the place associated with each entry. :)

I would really love to see a text list style page of our visited places again with links to the entries we’ve written about them. I miss being able to easily find someone’s entries about a place they’ve been to.

It would also solve that broken back button navigation problem inherent with AJAX. For example… I click to page two of someone’s visited list and click through to a place. Then I click the back button, and I’m not on page two anymore. It takes two clicks to get back to page two (and I have to remember that I was on page 2).

On the plus side… adding the ability to browse through the photos we’ve uploaded was brilliant!! I also like the stuff at the bottom that brings all the sites together.

Thank you for continually improving the site. :)

I really like it!

However, I have a question…

What’s the little medal image in my profile? It says local next to it.

I wonder about that, too.

What does it mean, and what makes it show up there?

old page look n feel is back!!

The new features are now in sync with the old feel. It looks more organized and functional this way. Thank you so much for enriching our experiences here.

However I have one more suggestion, just how my entry counter is shown below every place within my “want to go places” list, should be shown in my “has been places” also. I very well remember it used to show up in earlier 43 places profile page. It makes sense seeing number of entries made by people to their already visited places. Also I couldn’t locate the RSS feed button, is it now going to be available in the control panel only?

Photo's

It look’s great but their is just one thing… when showing where we have been could we have our own photo’s above the place name instead of other people’s please? Do you know what i mean?

"ASDF" in reorder_things?

I’m seeing a cryptic bit of text above the picture of myself on the reorder_things page. It reads “ASDF”. It’s in the source:

div id=”page-body”

asdf

Should that be there?

Does seem sharper all around!

I’m slightly agnostic on the flickr absence though certainly would love to see it maintained on things/people at least. I am still voting a bit for keeping direct links to things/people/allconsuming etc. at the top rather than the bottom of the pages, though I understand for design reasons why they are the bottom more clearly now. Still, even just a short, non-graphic-related row of those links somewhere—say right between the home/website info and the ‘add photos’/’edit your profile’—would be handy, I’d think. Maybe something that pops up only for the user of the profile once logged in, looking like ‘Your Things/Your People/Your Consumption/Your Lists’ or the like. Just thinking out loud!

A person's entries about a place page doesn't exist anymore?

When I go to a place and look at the list of people who have been there, I try to click on their entries, and I get “Oooops.” Is that fallout from the profile changes? I liked that feature a lot.

For example, go to Alaska and go to the “People who have been here” and try to click on their entries. Ooops.

That’s the same functionality I would like to see added back to our profile pages. Going to a person’s page and being able to drill down into the entries they’ve made about a visited place was very useful.

Hello Kim,
Thank you for the comment. I pushed a fix to the “Oooops” page. That should not happen anymore.

Nice work :D - my comments...

I like the following new things:

1. that you can cheer people’s profile pics now. I had been wanting to do this for a while.
2. The direct link to allconsuming from the 43places page (previously you had to go to ‘your entries’
3. the ‘most cheered’ column – it would also be good if you could split this into places and entries.
4. the photos tab – if you discover someone takes great photos you want to browse through all of their photos.

I miss the following old things:

1. The cheer counter on the 43places page. (why have an extra click to go to ‘cheers’?, this should go on the main page.
2. the map at the top

You could also add1. a direct link to ‘comments on your entries’ to your main 43places/43things page. As it is you have to go to Wanderlust/Zeitgeist, entries and comments, comments on your entries to get to it. I like to go to these pages regularly to get responses to my questions etc.
2. maybe this is just me being anally retentive, but i like to reorder my 43places from least cheered to most cheered because people tend to just cheer the ones at the top more. it would be cool if i could click ‘re-order my list from least to most cheered’ and it worked it out for me. lol i’m pathetic.

You guys always do such a nice job.

Just the other day I un-subscribed to someone cause they said something bad about the Bots! If you’re not a friend of the Bots, you’re no friend of mine :o)

I have sometimes wished for the ability to organize my 43T list into goals and sub-goals, i.e.

Make Christmas gifts
a. make pillow
b. make mosaic vase
c. make picture

But as I noted in a recent post, when it comes to lists I am a little nuts, and this feature would no doubt it would be more confusing than it is worth, so, never mind. Ignore me completely.

Except for the compliment of course, don’t ignore that.

P.S. Of course you weren’t even asking about 43T were you? Sorry again.

43places.com basics?

I’m so curious how to maximize what seems to be such a great site; how do I upload photos and desitinations in the travel area? How to I list things on the far right that seem to be tagged “worth doing?”

My photos have all been loaded and seem to be pwrking but under my photos it still reads “add photos” how to I correct that?

This is my first night on this site and I really love it!

to make any changes, go to the place you want to change

All actions you can do to a page are in green.

upload photos – look for Upload a photo of place

to add a place – type the name in the search box on the very top of the page, if the place is not there already, click on Add a new place to 43 Places
