Worth visiting!

Storytelling and Disc Golf in and near Pittsburgh!

It is a good long drive across Pennsylvania, we left on Thursday night drive from home about 6 or so hours to Wilkes Barre PA. Stayed the night at the dumpy yet somehow charming Days Inn. The next day we drove the rest of the way to Pittsburgh stopping @ Moraine State Park about 35 miles north of the city to collect information on the Disc Golf course there. We stayed at the Hilton in downtown Pittsburgh right across from Fort Pitt park at the tip of where two of the rivers meet. Nice hotel with valet parking that was too expensive and a resturant that was pricey but all in all it was fine, I am becoming such a penny pincher about some things, yet I can still drop $60 on discs everry few months. On Friday Elisa went about the meet and greet of the National Storytelling Conference, she was presenting on the subject of her book, bullying. You can get the book at Once Upon a Time…Storytelling to Teach Character and Prevent Bullying
We checked out the dispplay of this book and her other in the conference bookstore. It was the first night and already she had sold half the 40 books she sent to the store. Her first book was sold out 25 copies, becoming very popular it is! Doorways to the Soul : 52 Wisdomtales from Around the World It is very reasonably priced and makes a great gift..Plug plug plug…..
We went out to the Fanuel Hall of Pittsburgh, something…Station but were not particularly impressed. View of Heinze Field was pretty cool.

After a good nights sleep Saturday was filled with Disc golf. While Elisa did her conference thing Joy and I drove up to Moraine ( See their website ) to play a round. It was wet with passing showers in the morning but we were both really looking forward to a round. Moraine is when you play the long tees is a 1000 rated course and when you play the middle layout a 900 rated course. To those less informed on ratings this means it is one hard freaking place to play and you really have to be on your game. Joy played the middle while I attempted to play the long. After a bogey on 1, missed an easy 15 foot putt I birdied 2 and was feeling pretty good. Unfortunately my game is not up to the 1000 rating and bogies and doubles were to fill my morning. We played and were joyed and frustrated while loving the well laid out and challenging couse and when the round was over on the Par 66 course I had an 84 while Joy was not thrilled with her 105. Still it is an amazingly beautiful place with a challenges for all types of games.
It was about 11:30 when we finish so we grabbed a bite at the concession stand and as the sky showed the first threads of sun we ate and watched the swimmers. Off we went to or second round of the day, Knob Hill Park. ( Wesite here! )

This is a lovely park and the Disc golf is wonderfully laid out over a big hill. Joy played the 4780 foot shorter course while I again tried my luck on the longer 6615 foot version. Lots of open fairways but stil a challenging place to play. I threw a 74 but slipped so much on the grass, that was still damp that at one point I was very frustrated. Joy kept me in line though and we had a very good round. Joy threw a 79 and was please to be ahead of me by 2 throws after the first half. Both these courses are worth the visit if you are ever in the Pittsburgh area. Moraine is 35 miles north and Knob Hill only 15 miles north.

Saturday evening we went to the very nice if pricey Palamino restaurant right near the hotel. The food was excellent but still the bill was about $100 for the three of us. We settled into our room and watch Final Destination 3 while Elisa went to more of the conference. A good nights sleep and then came driving home.

All day Sunday was devoted to the getting home drive. We left the hotel at 6:15 and cruised hour after hour with minor stops across Pennsylvania. We planned to take a midday break for another round of Disc Golf. We had looked up a place near Wilkes Barre called the Francis E Walter dam disc golf course Website. It was a nice course with one set of tees and baskets and was 5,695 feet, a pretty good length. Elisa had a 99, Joy a 76 and I a 58 and it took about 2 hours to play the round. The course definately plays easier than its length. It was a bit damp on the ground as the area had rain the day before but the course was pretty and well groomed having hosted an event the day before. Got back in the car about 2pm and drove the last six hours home. A very good disc golf filled weekend.
