Food / Beer / Culture—this is one of my favorite tourist destinations in Iowa.

I’m trying to visit all 50 states, and the Amana Colonies caught my eye in my massive guidebook…
What’s cool to do or see here? It sounds a lot like Pleasant Hill in Kentucky, even though the Shakers were a different group…

Eating eating eating (family style German food at a number of the restaurants).
The furniture factory/shop (beautiful things)
The woolen mills (sweaters, scarves, etc)
The meat market (remember going there as a child with my great aunt who was friends with the owner; we got to go into the back of the store & sample the smoked meats)
A couple of the local historic museums
The Millstream Brewery (a more recent addition, but a fun little micro brewery)
The Amanas are about six small colonies scattered around—small from a population & geographic standpoint.
Also neat…Kalona Iowa which is south of the Amanas less than an hour away. It’s a Mennonite area. You’ll still see the horse drawn carriages & a grocery store without electricity!
