Quite right—and thanks for the back-up. Although ‘charming’ is not a word that sprung to mind at Hotel Asia ;-), it is a good hotel for it’s class. We should say that subway access is good too, just a short walk away. And there’s a brand new 7-11 underground at the station so it’s good for essentials.
I’ve stayed at the Sheraton several times too. It’s not as flashy as the Marriott or Hyatt just up the road, but it’s a very good hotel. I really liked the rooms. It’s not quite as convenient for shopping, but not particularly inconvenient either. I still prefer the Swissotel of course, but if your friend’s dad can get discounts I’m always happy to change my mind ;-)
And yes, Newton Circus. I wondered whether to mention this, but you’re dead right. It’s the best place to eat in the city IMO and the one truly essential spot that all visitors should go. The food is extremely cheap and totally excellent—as well as being very friendly. It’s a pain to cross two busy roads to get there from the hotels, but it’s still not far—only 5-10 mins walk. Highly recommended.

Holland Village
Well, that’s the good thing about living here, though everything else seems expensive especially the housing, cars etc, but the yummy and CHEAP food actually make up for that high cost of living here ;) I really love the food here and so many choices and varieties! You basically can find food everywhere and quite a few places run 24 hours too!
I can check it up for you on the discount if you like, but no promise…She is an Indonesian Chinese who has a home in Singapore and her brothers were all educated here in Singapore too. She always look me up whenever she is coming back here :)
Regarding NEWTON CIRCUS, they have in fact shifted the old Newton Circus food place to another area, hehe, about 5 mins away :P.. The old place is undergoing some renovation now…
Ahem, there’s one thing about in Singapore, though no nasty pollution like other countries, but we do have 1 type of pollution here-which is “noise” pollution, because we are always renovating and building new landscape/shops :P ..Forever drilling and fixing things here :P
Even all our cars here are “NEW” looking because you have to scrape them after driving for 10 years..all for the sake of looking everything sparkling new and clean :P
Btw, didn’t realise it’s a “pain” to take a 5-10 mins walk or crossing, geez, you do sound like a typical Singaporean, though I do know that you are not one ;)
P.S. I don’t remember you telling where you are from? U.K?

The new/temporary Newton Circus is just as good for me (although I must admit, I have a problem with eating stingrays—it feels like eating the family pet). I’ll be interested to see just how ‘improved’ it is when the renovation finishes.
Does Newton Circus have BGM? I didn’t notice TBH. It made me smile when you mentioned noise pollution—Japan is far, far worse. Japanese people have a real fear of quiet. We just turned down the chance to move to a new flat here for that reason—the flat was fantastic, but the street outside had 24-hour piped background music of the ‘Hammond Organ’ variety. Newton is relaxing in comparison!

Thanks for your “private” message, appreciate, hehe, so now I know that you have some “connection” with our Singaporean gal ;)
Glad you like our Newton Circus :)...Err, how can eating Stingray be comparable to eating a pet?? Who keeps Stingay as pet??... Ahem, eating Stingray is more than harmless ..as we don’t eat strange things like those in China or Korea(they eat DOG :((.. Esp china, they eat anything that “moves” :P
P.S. I love to eat the Stingray with plenty of hot, hot sambal chilli, the hotter the merrier, and go along with our Tiger Beer in NEWTON CIRCUS, can’t beat that heavenly feeling, yummy :P !
Ya, maybe it’s good idea that you didn’t pick that flat and not live near the “noise” polluted area..I live in the HDB flat in Holland Village area where it’s undergoing some upgrading for the whole area, including the park and the building itself…the project won’t end till end of the year..but now I’m so used to the noise and somehow it now become “music” to my ears when I wake up every morning!.. Hey, but not that kind of ‘Hammond Organ’ variety music you mentioned, I would hate that too ;)
Sorry, what’s BGM and TBH?

I’ve played (fondled?!) with the rays at Monterey Aquarium! It’s hard to see them as food…. they do go well with that chilli tho’!
BGM: Back-ground music
TBH: To be honest
Marrying Singaporeans is a way to lose taste buds—you end up being unable to taste anything lower than level 9 on the chilli scale.
