Actually I left San Francisco at about 1 PM, had dinner and slept on the way, and ended at LA next day at lunch time.

So, I’d say about 5/6 hours driving but you should count on spending about 1 day doing it if you really want to experience it. It’s not a easy road to drive, you better enjoy driving.

I did stop at these places and that’s why it took a while getting to L.A.:

Monterey – to go to the Aquarium
City of Carmel – south of Monterey
Point Sur State Historic Park – has a lighthouse, amazing landscape
Big Sur – very beautifull area
Ragged point Vista – waterfall
San Simeon – you CAN NOT miss going to the Hearst Castle.

Also, the view is stunning if the weather is good, I also stopped to take photos along the way.
