Worth visiting!

How this place changed my life

You will never find a more beautiful country then Suriname… Learn the taal – Sranan Tongo, and speak it, because everyone will be very excited if a foreigner speaks their language.

The jungles are beautiful, the villages are amazing and the people are great!

I love it. I am staying!

It's difficult

If you don’t speak Dutch it would be hard to have any type of good job in the country.

English is very well spoken in the capital, however outside of that you will not find much of the English languauge.

I speak Sranan Tongo fluently and I am pretty good with Dutch.

I am in the country as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I will be living here for about 27 months, 6 of which are over already.

I don’t know how hard the visa’s are, however it is next to impossible for the Surinamese to get one to leave the country to visit the U.S.

I figure that the matter would depend heavily on your country of origin.

If you are going to reside in Paramaribo it can be realtively expencive and you won’t find a lot of the things you find the U.S. – - however even the city is much cheaper then living in the U.S. but the better value is living in the district or a village setting, though that option is rarely open to foriegners. Keep in mind it is harder to find products and services the further away from the capital that you go.

Education in the city is pretty good, however it can vary outside of the city. Only Dutch is taught until highschool which children are taught English as well as French and or Spanish.

It is really and interesting country.
