Worth visiting!

Eye opener  — 2 years ago

I’m just back from a 10-day trip in the DPRK, and looking at the tags given here it is painfully obvious how much the ideas about the country are shaped by what we hear in the western press. Go with open eyes and an open mind (knowing that what you’ll be shown is a selection just like what you see and hear in the West is a – different – selection) and you’ll come away with a very different picture of this country.

I really hope that late president’s Kim Il Sung’s idea of reuniting the “two Koreas” (really one country, one people, one language) as federal country with two states, each with their own system, will one day become reality. Economic development in the North (helped already by joint ventures with South Korea and China) will help making that dream a reality – but so will, in a small way, visits from people from other countries, providing a small “window on the world” through those guides (like ours) that are not only interested in teaching about their country but also in learning from their guests. What won’t help is demonizing the country.

I’ve come away admiring these proud people and their old culture and hope to return one day to see more, and see how they’ve progressed.

The picture shows one small aspect I’ve come to love: all main roads across the country (not just entrances and exits to cities as you often see) are lined with flowers. Even when growing food is hard work, a small amount of effort is given to grow a little beauty.

I have to point out that HK is not a country…

Of course

HK is a country. It’s only to the eyes of China ppl that they are considered a “province” ;) I think everyone(except the chinese china ppl) knows that China wants the world to think they are part of China, and it’s only recently they took over them and but still leave Hong Kong to maintain its own HK ways.

Oh another so called “province” that China is eyeing for years is Taiwan =)

(Darn, we all can see that China is really good in “getting” all the “modern” countries and claim its theirs later on :))

I’m too comfortable having grown up in Shanghai and living in nyc to feel “China is more splendid simply because HK is part
of China”.

Whether you like it or not, it is not a country, politically.

And I’m afraid a lot more people actually think it’s part of China then you would assume, whatever their motivation is. Take for example, Hank Pauson, who insisted on leaving Goldman’s HK office open when it’s losing money years back, simply to “keep GS’ presence in China”.

I never imagined I would argue with someone about this on 43P, and I’ll stop here anyways.

It is

“POLITICALLY” belongs to China. Nobody can argue with that.

And ya that “I’m afraid a lot more people actually think it’s part of China” comes from the BILLIONS of chinese (China) ppl :)

Also, nobody can argue that China is a HUGE country and a BIG superpower, and now an emerging economy market with HUGE potential consumers. With big country like this, which country dare to argue with China if they want to claim HK or other “country” as their own? ;)
