A tip I have about this place  — 2 years ago

Go see the Vasa Museum.

It contains the restored Warship the Vasa which, because of bad design, sank in light winds in stockholm harbour on its maiden voyage in 1628. It was top heavy and they couldn’t put enough balast in it to make it stable.

Because the worms which normally destroy the remains of sunken vessels dont live in the cold waters there, the ship remained very well preserved in the mud until it was raised in the 1950’s.

They have restored it magnificently and the museum is the best
i have ever seen.

Gamla Stan

A review of this place: My kind of old town  — 2 years ago

One of charms of Europe are its remnants of mediaeval old towns, preserved to greater or less extent in cities like Bruges, Prague etc. Gamla Stan in Stockholm is up there with them, made all the more pleasant by its compactness (less than a square mile), absence of traffic and centrality. This is where you will find some of the nicest squares and priciest restaurants, as well as the imposing presence of the Kungliga Slottet (royal palace) and Storkyrkan (great chuch).

Vasa great museum  — 2 years ago

The Vasa museum is a majestic space to hold a majestic maritime treasure: the great Swedish warship that sank nearly 400 years ago in Stockholm harbour.

This is a ‘must see’ stop on the Stockholm tourist trail – take the 47 or 7 bus from the Kulturhuset or Tourist information centre.

The exhibit is a mixture of multimedia, artefacts, inspired art with the ship itself an amazing centrepiece. You can’t actually go on board but you get a great view of the exterior detail and craftsmanship.

There’s a nice restaurant/cafe with a patio on site.

The Stockholm Archipelago

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place  — 2 years ago

The Archipelago is beautiful and spending several days on the islands is very possible for budget travellers. Just bring your tent : it’s free.
About the boats, i have only one thing to do : never take the Cindirella I and Cindirella II, which are much more expensive than the others.

Ikea

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: The Original  — 2 years ago

Ikea rocks and there’s nothing better than going to the original. Read about the history of the company on their website and it will tell you how the store got its start and why it’s set up like it is. By the way, if you are from America, one of the best values is the original goose down comforters that they sell there. They compress and pack well too.

Museum Of Economic History

Worth visiting!

Simply Amazing  — 2 years ago

I am a professional numismatist for a living and I’ve seen some phenominal displays of coins, currency, and economic history. This museum is the best outside the Smithsonian Collection and American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum in Colorado. There are literally millions of dollars worth of coins and currency on display here.

Surprisingly we stumbled on this gem. It’s across the street from the Treasury Museum which is in the cellar of the Royal Palace.

Located in the Cellars of the Royal Palace  — 2 years ago

This is one of the better sites in Stockholm and includes many treasures that once belonged to the Swedish Royal Family. Included are king’s outfits in which they died, the taxidermied horse that once belonged to a king as well as burial clothes, and armor.
