I would stay downtown Warsaw as Jason says, although you could find somewhere much cheaper than 1200 dollars a month. Look on gumtree.pl for advertisements, call the renter up and hope they speak English. Perhaps don’t tell them you’re staying for such a short time. If you know anyone that can help you to find a flat in Warsaw that would be a great help – particularly if they speak English.
If you’re in the centre, don’t pay more than 400-600 dollars a month for a half decent flat. Look to stay around the area near Metro Ratusz, or Metro Polytechnika (tube stops). Of course you could stay further away from the centre – it depends what your habits are.
I’ve got some photos from Poland on my flickr website if you’re interested – www.flickr.com/photos/jamestorr.
Good luck!

Great pictures! They are great for getting a feel of what it must be like there.
Your response is very helpful. See my question if you can help fill me in on the broadband/wireless capabilities and costs in Warsaw it would be greatly appreciated. Also cell phone providers and if you’re aware that they are available to foreigners with pre-paid gsm.
What’s the glass sculpture place all about? It looks very fun.
Gumtree.pl looks like a very good resource, however I’ll have to pick up some rudimentary Polish to get started as I don’t see an English language version.
Maybe one of the Warsaw locals out there could help us out when we land? Will pay in beer. There is always a big difference when a local who knows the ropes can help.

As far as mobile phone providers goes I’d recommend Heyah as they’re by far the cheapest pay as you go service. No voicemail service but cheap as chips.
The glass was actually ice. You have to wear a thermal jacket to have a drink in the place.
As far as looking for a place goes – its a pretty big job for someone to find a place so I don’t really want to put anyone into the position of doing that. Perhaps try some housing agencies, the university or one of the bigger language schools for suggestions for help as they may already have something in place for you.
If you’re not sure about where to go in Poland you might have a better time in Wroclaw or Krakow as they are far more beautiful and cheerful than Warsaw…
