Get a hold of a copy of The Reader, and use that as your guide to Chicago’s cultural events and night life.
Is Medusa’s or Neo’s on Clark still in the biz? Medusa’s might be the goth club off of Belmont El Stop, I’m a bit hazy on that. There was a club too, on the south side of Belmont not far w. of the El stop, where men danced.
I recall some jazz clubs, Bull’s on Halstead, and some others on Halstead too.
There’s a Polish cabaret somewhere in the area of the West side.
Make sure you’re in good company. To get to some of these places you may have to come close to or cross gang territory. Go in packs, or at least in twos, and carry a large can of mace, and be ready to use it.

LOL wow…cafe when was the last time you were in the Chi?
Neo’s, Bull’s, MEDUSA’S?
Sounds like you partied pretty hard back in the day. But yea most of those places are closed. Neo’s is still open I think, but most of the Punk stuff moved out of that section of the city back in the 90’s.
And Medusa’s closed a LONG time ago.
As for gangs you should be just fine, there isn’t a gangmember to be found from the south loop all the way north to Loyola U. Nothing but preppy’s and drunk college kids these days.
