slo has this policy of zero-growth which makes it pretty hard to find cheap housing in san luis itself. however, as stated by others, north county is considerably cheaper, but not nearly as fun to live in.

the question is, are you looking to buy or rent? and if you’re looking to rent, do you want to live by yourself or would you want roommates? which would probably be calpoly students. if so, you’re looking as cheap as say $500/month if you’re pretty far from campus.

better yet, if you think you’ll stay in slo for more than a few years, live in north county for a year or two and save up to buy a house and then buy it somewhere close to campus. live there and rent it out and have your tennants pay your mortgage. that’s the way to go if you can afford it.

something else to consider besides your lifestyle and desire for the night life is whether you want to brave the cuesta grade on your commute every morning. the renovations have been done so it may not be bad, but i really have no idea how it can be during rush hour.

I’m looking to rent. I’m sort of worried because I live in the midwest right now, and making a decent salary, but have no clue what this new job would pay.

I didin’t see a lot of highways, so I was wondering about the commute.

Thanks for your help!

well, if you’re moving all they way out from the midwest i hope you’re making salary instead of hourly. you definitely need to find out what compensation and benefits they’re providing before you even decide to move.

the cost of living is definitely a bit higher out on the coast of california, but most jobs pay a bit better also. so if you’re making $15 an hour, you’re getting roughly 30k a year if you’re fulltime. but after tax, that’s about 20k a year. hopefully you’ll be making at least 40k though.

highway 101 is going to be your main route for getting anywhere i think. if you’re going to north county to work, or taking a trip to san francisco, or pismo beach, LA or santa barbera down south.

highway 1 runs north and south along the coastline. a lot more scenic, but windy and slower. nice drive though _

good luck!
