Thanks for all the helps people.
I will be there for a business visit. Staying there for approx 4 months. Apartment will be arranged by the company, but dont know the exact location except that it will be within 2 miles of Gateway Place, Zip : 95110

Most of my sight seeing travel is planned by rail or bus, within 5 miles I plan to travel by bike.

Many people have replied that san jose is pretty safe, I was wondering that if I am biking at 10pm is it safe or is there danger of things like mugging etc.,

Also how photography friendly is San jose. In many cities when you lug around a large camera with a tripod people give you hostile looks!
I am an avid photography freak, so I would want to take back lots of pics of San Jose and surrounding areas.

Also If I am planning a trip so that I start in the morning and come back by 8pm on a weekend(same day trip) can I travel to destinations 50-80 miles away by bus or something?

You can definitely ride your bike at night in most areas without fear of being mugged. San Jose has been named one of the safest big cities in America for several years in a row. As in any city there are places to avoid, but it doesn’t sound like you will be anywhere near them.
Also, there is a train stop that is walking distance from Gateway Place. So, you have the option of taking the train or riding a bike. The roads are quite wide in that area so if you want to ride a bike you should feel pretty safe from traffic.
As for the weekend trips you should be able to travel that distance away in the morning and get back the same night.
The Caltrain and Amtrak are also good choices for day trips.
Last, I work for my college newspaper and I know several avid photographers who take photos all over San Jose. I don’t think any of them has ever had a problem here. People here are generally friendly.
