Hi there-

I am actually a law student as well and I visited Madras over my winter break.

I was a little surprised as the lack of nightlife, since it is one of the larger cities in India.

The Park Hotel on Mount Rd (Ann Salai) has a good lounge that’s filled with a younger crowd. Also, if you want to go to the beach check out Taj Fisherman’s Cove resort at Covelong Beach. It’s secluded and clean, and has a nice pool and cabana area. But, it will be deathly hot so I don’t know if hitting up the beach is something you are going to want to do.

As for restaurants check out the restaurant at the Park. If you want an authentic South Indian meal try Dakshin at the Adyar Gate Hotel (Park Sherataon). Also, my favorite was Benjarong for Thai which is also near the Park Sheraton.

As for shopping I didn’t find great stuff, but that’s probably b/c I didn’t know where to go. But Spencer’s was good to get your fix of all the touristy stuff and any necessities from home that you may have forgotten.

Also, if you want to go to a spa hit up the Park. I got a tour of it and each spa room is modeled after one of the precious gems. However, it is priced comparable to any spa in the States. The Park also has a BBQ night every Tues. or Wed., I forget, right by the pool with a cover band which is a fun experience.

As you can see I seriously thought the Park was one of the best places in Madras. I guess it was the only place comparable to a place in Bombay or Dheli.

I might be visiting again at the end of the summer so I might be asking you how your experience was!
