My pleasure.

“Norway” in a nutshell is really a bit exxagerated; Norway is diverse, and the trip really only highligths western Norway and a little bit of the mountain-plateus in Norway.

It is however a very nice daytrip, particularily if you start and end it in Bergen. It is possible to take it as a daytrip from Oslo too, but that means a longer train-trip in both ends, which makes for a longer day without really adding anything worthwhile.

From Bergen you start by taking the Train to Finse. It is a train-ride of 2-3 hours or something, scenic, particularily the last part of it, but not what I’d call spectacular.

At Finse you change trains for the “Flåmsbane” which is. Spectacular that is. The valley down to Flåm is very steep, has several nice waterfalls and looks precisely like the kind of place you’d not dream of building a road of any kind, much less a railroad.

Flåm is a small village at the end of a side-arm from the Sognefjord (the longest fjord in Norway). Surrounded by scenic mountains, imho somewhat spoiled by an overabundance of souvenir-shops, but still nice.

From Flåm you take the boat out from Flåm and in the “Nærøyfjord”. It’s on the World Heritage list. It recently won a price as “best natural attraction” from the heritage-list. It deserves it. (atleast among the places I’ve seen)

From Gudvangen it’s bus to Voss and from there train back to Bergen. You passed Voss on your road to Finse, so really the circle closes here.

The bus-ride is also nice. If you’re lucky your bus-driver feels adventorous and drives the old “Stalheimskleiva” rather than the new moder tunnel. (actually, I think they do that during tourist-season and the tunnel at other times of year) It’s a nice enough norwegian valley. Scenic, but not uniquely so. (but then again, I lived in western norway most of my life, so maybe I’m just hard to impress)

My conclusion ? Recommended. Worth spending a day for, even if you’ve just got a week in Norway. Particularily if you’re in Bergen rather than in Oslo. From Oslo it’s the same, except it takes several hours more by train in both ends so it turns into a quite long day.
