Peru: Lima

A question about this place:
What's to do? Also, are there local tours from Lima to Machu Picchu? I want to book the trip once I arrive, though I will be Peru for a week only so schedule will be as tight as my budget. Oh, and is there any worthwhile desert around Lima??

One problem I noticed is the airfare between Lima and Cusco. Even on the website, when I go in as ‘North American’ as opposed to ‘Peruvian’ the price seems to fluctuate.

How much is a good price? Considering I will be buying the ticket a day before or the same day?

And late May…do you think I need to book a hotel at Cusco before getting there?

TACA and LAN Peru are 2 good airlines that fly into Cuzco from Lima—we paid about $120 round trip on LAN. Of course there’s probably lots of other local airlines but I’m a little scared of flying so I tend to stick with known airlines. On the 19% thing, the hotel where we stayed was Del Prado Inn, on the main square, fyi. I’m Peruvian so it wasn’t because we looked liked tourists or anything, but I did have to email the travel agent so she could fax the immigration forms to the hotel. On the positive side, free Wi-Fi! :)

On the hotel reservations, I don’t think you need to reserve ahead of time, Cuzco seems to be full of places to stay.
