A few nice places in Honduras are (some previously stated)...

The Lago de Yojoa. It’s not very far from San Pedro Sula, maybe an hour or two by car.

The waterfalls are really nice too, Pulapanzak. You can go behind the curtain of the waterfall with a guide (prepare to be soaked completely), it’s really freakin’ great!

Copan Ruins are cool too, if you’re into history or archeology, or you think the Mayans were cool for thinking of 0 as a number. If you’re going to be in Guatemala, the places there are bigger and better. I’ve never been to Guate, but my parents have and many people I know have been as well, and it’s definitely cooler in Tikal (Guate) than Copan.

The beaches are alright on the mainland and you can get some great fresh fish almost anywhere, but the islands off the north coast are the best. They’ve got a coral reef, and a lot of people there speak English too. Also, loads of fresh fish. It’s really a completely different atmosphere on the islands compared to the mainland. I’d recommend Utila before Roatan…Roatan is full of tourist stuff and it’s more expensive. Utila is nicer overall and it still has some tourist things at a lower cost. There’s scuba diving of course, and you won’t find scuba diving cheaper anywhere else in the world.

There’s also the “Canopy Tour” where you’re in gear similar to rock climbing gear, and you slide down these cables through the rain forest. I can’t think of any words to describe it better, but here are some pictures from when I went in Dec.

The place I went is near Omoa (beach ~1 hour from San Pedro Sula). You’re in the mountains and you see the beach when you’re up there, really spectacular. They have another Canopy Tour in Copan where you can see the ruins from the cables, another in Roatan and a couple more, but I don’t know where. It’s really great for people of all ages. Younger kids think it’s the best thing ever and my parents along with other adults about their age love it too. It’s also very secure. I know it might look dodgey, but the equipment is top notch and you’re always secured to something so you won’t go splat on the ground.

The market, Guamilito, in San Pedro Sula has lots of stuff for tourists. All kinds of things, jewelry, ornaments, crosses, sculptures, funky pens, wooden boxes…something for everyone.
And finally Imapro has loads of stuff for tourists as well. Imapro is a real store, not like a market where prices vary. The wood work at Imapro is really impressive. I’ve got a wooden box from there that I’ve had since 1990, and it’s still in perfect condition.

I can’t really think of anything else off the top of my head.

I know Nicaragua has some surfing. Costa Rica has a cool volcano you can go near.
