Do you want to camp out or stay in a hotel? There is lodging at the park, but we did not stay there. For camping I would recommend the Namakanipaio Campground. We also hiked into the Halape backpacking site (beautiful secluded beach) and the hut on Red Mountain (alpine with the most spectacular star-gazing in the world). We also stayed at the Volcano Bed and Breakfast in Volcano and they have gorgeous little cabins with porches, fresh fruit in the fridge and local microbrews at happy hour. Lovely! If you are just getting into Hilo, the Wild Ginger is an affordable, funky hotel not far from the farmer’s market and the downtown.
